By The Way Bakery

By The Way Bakery | Leslie Kahan Photography

By The Way Bakery is truly a special place, and a must visit for gluten-free patrons in NYC. It’s an old-fashioned dedicated gluten-free bakery where cookies, scones, breads and more are made by hand, in small batches.

By The Way Bakery | PC: Julie Bidwell

From the start, owner Helene Godin wanted to create an authentic experience, something local and handmade, for the gluten-free community. “I refused to compromise. We needed to be able to say, ‘this is delicious’ with no excuses. (As in, ‘By the way, it’s gluten- and dairy-free.’)”

Without question, she has accomplished that at each of By The Way’s four locations. Helene says the “Lemony Lemon” layer cake with lemon zest and homemade lemon curd is always a crowd pleaser.

The almond cookies are fantastic (and award winning!) with a crunchy outside and a moist center.

This is another of Erin Smith’s favorite gf spots in NYC. “By the Way Bakery is an excellent choice whether you are gluten-free or not. They have a delicious selection of cakes, cookies, and more. BTW made my wedding cake and the guests had no clue the entire cake was gluten-free. By the Way Bakery is the best in the city! You can find their products at their bakeries and at Whole Foods throughout Manhattan.”

Friedman’s

This popular New American restaurant serves lunch through dinner with plenty of gf options under a simple mantra: eat good food. And they want gf patrons to do just that for breakfast through dinner. Most dishes can be prepared gf and those that are gluten-free are clearly marked with a gf toothpick flag before being served.

Friedman’s | Facebook

Friedman’s commitment to gluten-free started when one of the restaurant’s pioneers was diagnosed with celiac disease. “She was vocal about making it a gluten-free safe haven for her and her celiac peers. She was adamant that there be only one menu available which would be entirely gluten-free. After long hours in the kitchen and playing with all different sorts of flours we believe we have created some of the best pancakes, waffles, and fried chicken. More importantly, they are all intrinsically gluten-free.”

Today only a few items on the menu contain gluten including the hamburger buns which can be substituted for gluten-free bread.

Friedman’s | Facebook

It’s a great place for gluten-free breakfast classics, sandwiches and burgers, salads, and an incredibly tasty gf fried chicken (dedicated gf fryer) & cheddar waffle (made with gf flour blend) with habanero honey.

The Thirsty Koala | Official

“Australians love their seafood and their fish and chips, so I set out to make a gluten free version.
