Mediterranea Restaurant & Bakery

Mediterranea | Official

Located on Ormond St in Southeast Atlanta, you’ll find Mediterranea—a beautifully designed, deliciously satisfying, dedicated gluten-free restaurant and bakery certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group. Owners Gerard Nudo (Italian pastry chef) and Gary McElroy (celiac) say that “the traditional Mediterranean diet, with an emphasis on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, beans, nuts, and legumes; its reliance on seeds, herbs, and spices, and its attention to fish, seafood, and poultry, is our culinary foundation.”

In the kitchen, Chef Anthony Galletta, took inspiration from his Mediterranean heritage when he came up with his fabulous Calabrese Shrimp & Orzo. Bursting with flavors of spicy Calabrese peppers, creamy feta cheese, braised escarole, golden raisins, crunchy pine nuts, and gf corn and rice orzo, this is a house favorite.

Mediterranea | Official

A popular customer dish is the involtini—thinly sliced zucchini roasted then wrapped around pan-fried haloumi cheese, served over a rice blend, pine nuts, yellow pepper coulis, and tomato sauce. Steak frites are also a big hit with heritage black angus skirt steak drizzled in house chimichurri sauce, served with crispy fingerling potatoes and an olive aioli.

For brunch, you’ll want to try the house made gf cheddar chive biscuits topped with chicken sausage gravy and two eggs any style. No visit here would be complete without indulging in a few of the mouthwatering desserts or pastries. The lemon mini bundt, chocolate chip cookie, and cherry pecan scone will undoubtedly be some of the best, if not the best, you’ve ever had.

Gluten Free Cutie

Just north of Atlanta in Roswell, you’ll find Gluten Free Cutie—an allergy-friendly, dedicated gluten-free, sweets boutique and coffee shop. The specialty here—gf southern cuisine!

Gluten Free Cutie | Official

Owner, Natalie Dorsey, says Gluten Free Cutie all started because of her little girl, Savanna, who is allergic to dairy, gluten, soy, and artificial dyes. When Natalie found out she too needed to remove gluten (plus eggs) from her diet, she said “I knew I couldn’t live without biscuits and something fried. I came up with our cheddar biscuit and paired it with slices of fried green tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon and house made onion jam.”

Good Karma Coffee House

Good Karma Coffee | Official

In Avondale Estates you’ll find no shortage of gluten-free goodness from Good Karma Coffee House—a 100% certified gluten-free restaurant offering delicious homemade recipes. Owner Brenda Moore’s daughter, Sharonda Frazier, worked hard to develop allergy friendly recipes after realizing the impact gluten, dairy and nut allergies were having on her family. She wanted to create meals her family could enjoy “without sacrificing good flavor and healthy food.” You can experience her recipes for a full breakfast and lunch menu and mouthwatering pastries.

Good Karma Coffee | Official

Brenda says a must try is the French toast. “It can be very hard to find a delicious homemade gluten free French toast that isn’t brick hard and tastes like cardboard. We worked really hard on creating our delightful brioche bread that is cut into thick slices and soaked in a cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla and coconut milk solution. It is then cooked to golden-brown perfection and topped with powdered sugar and fruit.”

Customers love the vegan scramble with creamy homemade grits or sautéed diced potatoes topped with spinach, onions, sundried tomatoes, portabella mushrooms, avocado slices and cheese with a side of chipotle yogurt sauce. It can be accompanied with our fluffy, buttery biscuit or toast.

In the mood for gluten-free chipotle flavors? You’ve got two great options.

Good Karma Coffee | Official

Arepa Mia

Arepa Mia | Official

At its multiple locations in Atlanta, this 100% dedicated gluten-free restaurant serves authentic Venezuelan cuisine with a a distinctive combination of sweet, savory and spicy flavors for any palette.

Owner Lis Hernandez said, “I fell in love with cooking from a very early age, watching my mom prepare her dishes and helping her sell her arepas at the market. I decided to make my restaurant 100% gluten free so that anyone who had sensitivities can come eat here without worrying.” She is incredibly proud of all her dishes, but says the dish that best embodies the essence of Arepa Mia is the Arepa Sifrina.

Arepa Mia | Official

“This arepa is inspired here in the south and it’s a favorite of many because every bite is so full of flavor and every ingredient comes together beautifully. The corn meal patty is grilled to perfection, a little crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, then it’s split in half and stuffed with savory shredded chicken, fresh organic lettuce, tomato, avocado, sweet plantains, guayanés cheese and finished off with a little cilantro sauce, fresh corn sauce and a medium Thai chili. It’s absolutely divine!”

Arepa Mia | Official

The cachapa pernil is another must try. This is slightly different than an arepa, being that it’s a pancake made with fresh, sweet yellow corn. It’s typically eaten with fresh cheese, but in this case the grilled Cachapa is topped off with a 12-hour roasted pork that has been cooked with mojo sauce which gives it a citrusy flavor. The tender shredded pork is placed on top of the corn pancake with caramelized onion, guayanés cheese and cilantro sauce. It’s tender, flavorful and delectable.

Arepa Mia | Official

Lis says another customer favorite is the empanada domino. “The empanadas we make are a two half moon shape turnovers made with cornmeal flour. They are filled with organic black beans, sweet plantains and queso de año (a traditional white Venezuelan cheese) and are then fried to a golden brown and served with nata (creme fraiche) and guasacaca sauce (our vegan sauce made with fresh herbs, garlic and onion.”
